Minds Academy in Birmingham, Alabama, our mission is to reimagine the K–8 learning experience for all learners through S.T.R.E.A.M. exploration, personalized learning, and social-emotional growth. We cultivate a rigorous and innovative learning environment where students explore S.T.R.E.A.M. careers, engage in personalized, mastery-based learning, and grow socially and emotionally through our P.O.W.E.R.S. values, ensuring every child develops the skills, confidence, and character to thrive in a rapidly changing world. S.T.R.E.A.M. Education
At xS.T.R.E.A.M. Minds Academy, we go beyond STEM by integrating Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math into a dynamic, interdisciplinary learning experience. Our S.T.R.E.A.M. program empowers students to explore real-world problems, engage in hands-on design challenges, and develop the creativity and critical thinking skills needed for the future.
Through dedicated S.T.R.E.A.M. classes, industry-aligned projects, and immersive learning experiences, students collaborate, create, and innovate—preparing them for the demands of the 21st-century workforce and beyond.
Personalized Learning
We believe every child learns differently, and at xMA, that difference is celebrated. Our Personalized Learning model puts students at the center of their education by tailoring instruction to individual needs, strengths, and interests. Using core strategies like Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Small Group Instruction, Blended Learning, and Mastery-Based Progression, students move at their own pace and receive the support or challenge they need. Learning is tracked through Personalized Learning Plans, Challenge Boards, and student-led portfolios, ensuring every learner is seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.
Social-Emotional Learning
At xMA, we teach the whole child not just academics.
Our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) approach is embedded into every classroom and interaction, helping students build emotional intelligence, empathy, resilience, and a strong sense of self. Grounded in the CASEL core competencies and reinforced by our P.O.W.E.R. values, SEL at xMA includes daily check-ins, restorative practices,, and culture-building routines.
Students learn to regulate emotions, resolve conflicts, and develop the confidence to lead with purpose in school and in life.

Dr. Melissa Capehart
School Founder
Born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Melissa Capehart is an accomplished educator, school founder, and advocate for equity in education. She holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, an Educational Specialist degree in Instructional Leadership, and Leadership certification from Samford University. She also earned a Master’s in Secondary Education and a Bachelor’s in History and Psychology from the University of Alabama.
Dr. Capehart brings nearly two decades of experience in both teaching and leadership roles. She has earned multiple accolades throughout her career, including “2017 Teacher of the Year” and the 2024 “Teacher in the Trenches” award for her service as a Technology Integration Specialist.
